Subject: [DL-J] Green Were The Color Of Her Eyes

Green Were The Color Of Her Eyes.

She was just about to pour herself a second stiff drink when she heard
someone pounding on the front door. She ignored it and took a long sip
of the drink hoping who ever it was would go away. But the pounder
didn't take the hint and keep up the noise until she finally slammed
the cup and bottle down and went to answer it.

When she saw it was Jerram standing there, she tried to slam the door
shout, but he caught hold of the door and pushed his way inside.

"What is wrong with you?" He asked as he advanced into the room. "Why
did you take off that way when we got back here? I thought you wanted
to see how your mother was?"

"I saw she was just fine and didn't need my help so I left," the anger
in her voice was apparent as she turned away from him and went back
into the kitchen for her drink. She didn't tell him that Kay had waved
her off at the last minute. But then he probably knew that already!

He followed and took the glass from her hand when he saw the level of
liquid the glass held.

"I thought you were here to protect the Warrenlady and wanted my
help!!" he growled setting the drink out of her reach.

"I am. I did but I didn't know you were going to be so hands on about
it," she half sneered, turning to go back into the main room.

He followed.. What else could he do.

"Hands on...? Look it isn't what.. " he was about to say something else
but she cut him off.

"I can see you take your job protecting the Warrenlady's *body*
seriously," she quipped, knowing she sounded like a shrew but unable to
stop herself. "I guess it didn't cross your mind that you could have
done it with your clothes on! Or were you frisking her to make sure she
really was the Warrenlady and not some assassin made up to look like
her! She has a mate who loves her. Did you think about that? No you
just had to encourage that dragon of yours to fly after the Queen
and.."

"It was just a mating flight so get over it? It's not like you've never
seen one before, or been in one yourself," his tone was scolding as he
cut her off. "Or has your Kasha never risen to mate... You're how old?"

'Little do you know', she thought to herself. But then he didn't know
what she did. He didn't know how much his winning had screwed things
up. If Tara became pregnant.. It would mean that he, not Kay was her..
and she had slept with him... gave birth to his child.. She couldn't
deal with it.

"Just go away," she begged, feeling a little sick at the thought of how
events were turning out.

"I'm not going anywhere until I find out what in the hell is wrong with
you?" he warned her. "Tara is home and safe and I would have thought
you'd be happy about that!"

"You don't understand!!" she all but screamed at him, unable to control
the thoughts going on in her mind. "It's wrong!! All wrong!! It
shouldn't have turned out this way!! Not with Seydor winning! He wasn't
suppose to win and it ruins everything!"

"CALM DOWN!!" Jerram shouted, his hands moving up to rake his fingers
through his hair as if wanting to pull it out or to keep from doing
with them what he wanted to do. Shake some sense into her!

"It was just a mating flight. They happen all the time," he tried to
reason with her. "It's not like someone tried to kill her.. If it'll
put your mind at ease.. I've never heard of anyone dying during a
mating flight.. Besides all we did was..."

"If you don't mind, I'd rather not hear about how good you were in
bed," she snapped before he could tell her all that had... or rather
didn't happen during the mating flight. "I never would have believed
you were one of those who likes to brag about it."

"On I never have to brag about that darling.. the ladies do it for me.
But if I didn't know any better I would say you were acting like a
jealous mate!!" he accused with a slight mocking amusement in his tone
..

"If you only knew," she hissed without thinking and then regretted it
the moment the words were out of her mouth. She prayed he didn't ask
what she meant, but she wasn't that lucky.

"If I only knew what?" his voice cut across the room, He saw a strange
look, almost like fear come into her eyes before she turned away
instead of answering him and started for the door.

"Oh no you don't," he moved quickly, blocking her path to the door,
demanding in a harsh firm voice. "You're going to tell me what you
meant by *If I only knew*."

"Nothing," she denied, trying to push by him but he wasn't having it.

"We're not going anywhere until you tell me what you meant," he warned
and by the tone of his voice she knew he meant it.

"I just meant... that.. That it shouldn't have happened this way," she
lied, to avoid telling him they had been .. would be.. mates in years
to come. She didn't want to bring it up if she could avoid it. "In my
timeline.. Seydor *never* won Varaenna. Don't you understand!! He never
won the queen. It's all my fault that he did this time... If I hadn't
come back... and messed up the timeline then none of this would have
happened!"

He did shake her this time when her voice began to take on a hysterical
whine. "Stop it!" He ordered. "You are NOT to blame! You didn't cause
any of this.. But that's not what you meant! Is it?"

"What else could I have meant," she turned her head away from the eyes
boring into hers.

"What else indeed," he mused sarcastically and then released her
suddenly as a thought must have come to him. "No... Impossible.. It
couldn't be... But then again.. you were of the age to have a crush..
That would explain a lot. Why else would you be so upset that Seydor
won the Queen?"

"A crush!! On you? You're delusional!" She gave a snort, still not
meeting his eyes. His words hurt her. "What could I possible see in an
over bearing ass like you?"

She felt him move away from her and lifted her eyes to find him
standing there with his arms crossed and the fingers of one had
stroking his chin as he watched her though narrow eyes while trying to
work out a few things in his head. "Then tell me... Why else would you
be over-reacting to a simple mating flight like a Landbound fish wife?"

"A FISH WIFE!! I am NOT!!" her voice rose at the insult. "If I'm acting
this way it's because I'm upset that..."

"Upset my dragon won the flight.. or upset because *I* was with someone
else.. humm. Yes that would defiantly explain why you're acting this
way. You're jealous."

"Jealous!! Of all the conceited...." she struggled to find words to
dignify his stupid assumptions, but found them hard to come by. So
instead she just lifted her head to the side and rolled her eyes. "I
wouldn't have you if you were that last man on this planet! So why
would I be jealous that your dragon won today, except that it changes
the time line... *Not*
because I have any feelings for you."

"Shall we put that lie to a test humm?" he asked, a wicked smile
glinting in his eyes and before understanding hit her, his hand snaked
out grabbing her wrist, pulling her into his arms and his lips were
descending to capture hers before she could move away.

At first she fought him. Tried to remind herself that it was wrong to
be allowing his kisses. But his lips knew what they were doing as they
wooed hers to open and allow a much deeper kiss.

Her struggles faded as old feelings surfaced and soon she was kissing
him back. Gone were the reasons why this shouldn't be happening. Her
body could only remember the feel of his hard solidness and gloried in
the sensations coursing through her. She struggled to make him let go
of his hold on her arms. Not to get away from him, but to allow her to
wrap her
arms around his neck, pulling him even closer.

All to soon the *test* was over. She knew the moment he began to pull
away from her and her own memories began to reassert themselves.

"Is -this- what you didn't tell me?" he asked, his voice husky as he
fought the desire her closeness had caused. "That you and I... in the
future?"

She could only nod her head unable to trust herself with words.

"No," he shook his head as if to deny it as some kind of joke on her
part. It just couldn't be. "You're lying. The age difference alone
would have been to great... you're parents never would have allowed
it.."

"But they did. They knew it wasn't some silly crush!" she said softly
as the words poured out of her. "Even though you fought your feelings
every step of the way until Kasha's first mating flight.. Seydor made
damn sure no other male but him had a chance in hell of winning her. He
flew well that blue of yours because he knew!! He won because of -you-
his rider!
Because he knew -You -loved -me!!"

Subject: [USS CAPRICORN]- More Questions than Answers

MD 1
1800

Miaren sat quietly and allowed the storm to wash over her. Inside she
was brimming with indignation. Sadly part of what the first officer
said was true. And for that she did not have any answers.

Miaren did not know to whom she was more furious with..HHQ who sent her
here on a lie in hopes of setting someone up. For everyday since her
arrival she felt as if something was not on the up and up.

But who were the ones set up here? Her? Her parents life work? The
Captain? This ship? Someone had a beef.and it could very well be all of
the above. And for some reason she really did not like that idea.

Lab rat? Miaren softly chuckled. She had not been called that since
the academy. It hurt then.but not now.she was proud of who she was.
She was proud of her parent's life's work and where she had hoped she
would spend the rest of her life.

She had allowed herself in innocence to be manipulated and worked thru
with Andrew. She had thought he loved and cared for her.when all he
really wanted was glory and recognition thru her hard work. To ride her
coat tails to the top and walk with those she had grown up with. His
betrayal had been complete...

The tone grew sterner with a serious implication of threat.

[SNIP]
.. So tell me Doctor, why are you here, who the hell sent you, and most
importantly where do your loyalties lie? "
[END SNIP]

Miaren looked back up into the burning eyes of the First Officer.
Miaren suddenly felt a calm that she should have recognized would get
her into deep trouble. She felt herself smile.

"Tis true I was sent here ta treat thy sister." She retorted softly her
lilt deepening as her ire grew.

"Tis also true that I be a lab rat.and a damn fine one.and damn proud
ta be called one." She answered hotly. "As ta who pulled the
strings..that IS a good question. One ya should look into..I am sure
we would both love ta know."

"What pains me tis the fact that I could have helped thy sister..and if
they did send me here knowin she wasn't.well.if'n I were you I'd be a
might ticked... I know I am."

Miaren glanced over to see if a reaction was forthcoming. The stony
silence and grim look on her face was enough for Miaren to glance
away.but sadly not enough to still the rage she was feeling inside.

She knew without a doubt this woman hated her..and from what she said
it was more than just seeing the Commander in his altogether.

"As for the missin crewman..I can not say what happened..and I am not
responsible for the deaths of the others. I seem ta remember ya can't
recall much of what happened in that blasted castle either...and I for
one am NOT amused that ya be layin that one at my door." Miaren
retorted.

"What does concern me..." Miaren stopped and paused for a moment. Did
she really trust this person who stood before her? The simple answer
of No was enough for her to switch gears.

"What does concern me is that this place whether I like it or not.tis
now my home.and that makes all aboard my family..and as the chief
medical officer..I be responsible for those under my care."

Miaren looked back at her First Officer. "And that means you as
well..so I guess we best be learnin how ta work together...becoz if'n
we don't..we will be lost."

Miaren took a deep breath and studied the woman before her. She was
not really a bad sort.highly opinionated...obstinate, pig-headed and
stubborn to boot. She was passionate about certain things and cold as
the grave on others.

Miaren was still slightly intimidated by her.her brisk manner and
coldness. She had been surrounded by passion all her life..tempered
with compassion and a thirst for the truth.

Her first officer appeared to have that same thirst for the
truth.perhaps this could be the one single bond she could work on..to
find that one fine line she could walk on with her.

"As for my loyalties...they have never changed. Family first..then
helpin others and my research.."

"That answer is not acceptable." Montana began..

"Why?" Miaren asked simply.."All on board are now my family..."

Montana took a deep breath and step towards the door. "We will
continue this at a later time." She replied. "That is a promise." With
that the First Officer stepped from the room and let the door shut
behind her.

Miaren laid back in her bed and contemplated on this conversation. She
had allowed her anger and ire to get in the way of her better judgment.
The First Officer would not let these issues die...which in many ways
a good thing.but Miaren could never let on she was glad she was poking
her nose into it.

She too wanted to know why she had been chosen and sent. The gift
offered was now looking more like a trap and she was the honeyed bait.
Someone big was pulling the strings..someone in the deep dark shadows..
someone who had many puppets dancing to his tune.

She would not allow anyone here to be harmed if she could help it. She
closed her eyes and went over the veiled hints of her father.his
warnings that all was not well..but they were safe as were those in the
lab...

She knew her job..she knew what was needed from her...and she would not
fail them...any of them...

She knew she had an ally in Andrew..funny how she had met two Andrew's
both were different as night and day. She hoped that he would not turn
his back on her now...not with the results from the check up.

What had happened? She knew she went to sleep with her clothes on..she
could not have removed her clothes on her own.. If she had they would
have been scattered about on the floor...

Those dreams were too real..and yet other than the soft bruisings on
her person.some in very personal areas..no sign of an intruder...

Miaren turned on her side and closed her eyes. She was tired..and she
would get to the bottom of this..but in the morning...as she closed her
eyes and drifted off to sleep.just out of the corner of her
consciousness were those sad...silvery blood rimmed
eyes..watching..waiting..

NRPG - just some character development and moving the story along...

[SUMMARY]

Montana demands answers..Miaren responds with a hint of anger and snaps
back. She finds she is not as intimidated as she once was.nor is she
afraid of her First Officer anymore.
