Subject: [DL-J] Instant Popularity

The sun was high in the sky and warm on their back as the dragon and
his
passenger circled down towards the sandy beach of Jasra Warren.

A dark blue dragon with yellow bolts of color on her wings, was waiting
for the visiting dragon to land so they could greet their long awaited
friend from their old home. They had first cleared the way for the new
dragon to land after reassuring the watch dragons that they were known
friends, not a threat to the Warren.

Friends who had been expected and had finally after months of waiting
were
there. The rider of the Blue dragon moved quickly forward to help her
friend down and then the two were in each others arms happily renewing
their friendship.

"Oh I'm so glad you're finally here!!" Tera, rider of the blue,
Sundellath, cried as the two pulled apart to look at each other. She
spoke
quickly as if there wasn't enough time to say all that she wanted to
say
before her friend left again. "Treb so was excited when I told him his
Auntie Abby was coming to see him, and you'll never believe how much
Ryan
has grown. The warm sun and sea here is so good for them.... How are
your
parents... and Ben'sar.. I got your last note saying he'd returned..
I'll
bet your parents are over the moon."

Abbien of Telnor, sister-in-law of the Rider now of Jasra, laughed at
her
friends over zealous welcome. "The sun and sea air seems to be doing
wonders for you too. There's more color in your face now then when I
saw
you last. I can't wait to see the boys too.. and the folks are fine.
Wonderful in fact now that they know their youngest son is still among
the
living... We all just wish..."

Her voice trailed off as if she regretted what she had been about to
say.
"I'm sorry.." she said softly when she was the sadness come into her
friends eyes.

Abby's oldest brother, Ga'brin had been Tera's mate and father of her
two
sons, one of which he had never known about. For he'd been killed.
Struck
down by Ash'chenon, a former rider from Whiteriver who had moved to
Telnor
Warren with a dragon he was not joined to in tow. Ash's body and mind
had
been taken over by a new breed of *Hellspawn* and when Ga'brin had
faced
him down at the Battle of Geode for murdering the men in Ga'brin's
flight
wing... The Ash-wraith had proven the stronger of the two... Tera had
been
devastated upon learning of her mate's death, and upset that the Warren
did nothing to Ash who she blamed.

Tera shook her head slowly as she reached for Abby hand. "No Abby. You
have nothing to be sorry for. We both loved him and miss him. Not
talking
about him doesn't make the ache go away.. To tell you the truth...
having
you here.. someone who knew him and understands will help me and Treb a
lot. He loves to hear stories about his daddy."

"Well I've a lot of stories to tell him," Abby gave a sad grin, then
looked around. "Where are those nephews of mine?"

"With their sitter for now," Tera told her, then turned to thank the
rider
who had brought Abby to Jasra. "There's food and something cool to
drink
in the dining hall. If you're not going right back, you should try the
foods here. Simply wonderful and the fish is better then anything you
might get back home."

The rider, Hodaell thank her for the offer and explained that he was
going
to be there a few days visiting an old friend. He bowed to the ladies
and
excused himself.

Tera turned back and motioned for a young man to come forward. "Abby
this
handsome young man is Ojean, Teewith's rider. He's offered to take your
bags to the apartment I've picked out for you to stay in while you're
here."

Abby turned to greet him and stared as if trying to remember from where
she thought she remembered him from. "Ojean... Are you from here?"

"No ma'am Healer Abby," he grinned and Abby wondered if he had any
trouble
keeping the girls away. Such a handsome one he was. "I came here a few
years ago with my Sister Shawnee and Saul of Whiteriver."

Abby's eyes opened wide in surprise. "Saul is here? Last I'd heard he'd
taken a mate and had a daughter.. But I hadn't heard they had left
Whiteriver."

"You 'are' a little behind times," Ojean teased, as he shouldered the
biggest bag. "They have three kids now. Two boys and a sweet little
girl,
who's the apple of her daddy's eyes."

The Telnor healer looked impressed, then chuckled. "Who'da thunk it of
Saul."

"Believe it," Tera warned with a wink at Ojean, who picked up the rest
of
Abby's bags and waved good-bye. "All you have to do is take one look at
Saul and you just know how much he loves Shawnee and those kids of
theirs."

"I'll get these to your apartment healer," Ojean promised. "My...
Mate...
Cill's there now with the boys putting all the finally touches you
women
seem to like."

"Thank you Ojean.." Tera's eyes rose at his use of the word 'mate'. So
he
had finally broken through to the young woman's heart. "We're going to
get
something to eat and then we'll be right along."

After the young man had left Abby turned to her friend. "This Shawnee..
She must be some woman to have captured Whiteriver's resident lady's
man,"
Abby joked as Tera slipped her arm around the healer's and began to
lead
her towards the dining hall. Abby remembered as a young girl the first
time she had seen Saul of Whiteriver. He had been one of the most
handsome
men she had ever seen and his face had haunted her dreams for weeks.
But
then she had met Marcus.... But he was her past now. She knew just how
Tera had felt when she lost her mate... Abby had felt the same way when
her own had been killed. She did however envy Tera with her children.
At
lease her sister-in-law had a part of Ga'brin to remember him by. Abby
only had her memories.

"Oh Shawnee is something special alright," Tera agreed, breaking into
Abby's memories. "And Saul adores her as she does him. You should see
him.
He's so wonderful with his children... His ah... Oldest son, Byrin is
here
for an extended visit and he's.. a lot.. like his dad."

"Oh?" Abby shot her a questioning look when she noticed the slight
blush
that colored her friends cheeks. "Do tell."

Tera gave a short laugh. "Well let's say the sun and sea air around
here
isn't the only thing that helps to remind me that I'm still alive.
Believe
me... If Byrin is anything like his father... I can well understand why
Shawnee always has that glowing smile on her face."

"Tera!!!" Abby exclaimed as if shocked by her friends words!! But Tera
could see her friend wasn't upset. She was trying hard not to break out
laughing. "That good huh?"

"Purrrrrr..." Tera sighed and then laugh. "Come on.. let's get
something
to eat and then I'll take you to see the boys."

"Oh Tera... Not fair changing the subject. Things were just starting to
get interesting..." Abby's eyes narrowed. "But this one time I'll let
you
get away with it be cause I'm hungry. But I want to meet this man of
yours
sometime."

"Oh he's not my man," her friend was quick to tell her, so she wouldn't
get the wrong idea. "Let's just say we're... ah.. good...friends."

"Friends huh?" Abby laughed, but left it at that.

They were just about to the steps leading into the dinging hall when
the
alert came. Sundellath, having know Abby all her life had included the
healer in her send. Especially since it involved an injured dragon.

>>They are bring in an injured sea dragon,<< Sundy told them both. >>All
the Dragonhealer's are tied up working on those hurt during the
battle..
but a Healer is needed. Will you help Abby?<<

Abby turned to Tera. "Take me where they're bring the injured dragon.
Sundy says all the other healer's are busy."

"This way," the Jasra rider started off, knowing the healer would
follow.

"Wait!!" Abby cried and turned to head back the way they had come. "I
need
my bag with all my supplies in it."

>>Teewith's rider will bring it and meet you there,<< Sundy's voice
entered her mind, causing Abby to give a short laugh as she turned to
follow Tera again.

"Handy having a dragon listen for your thoughts," she quipped as Tera
stepped up the pace.

When they got to the beach front cave set up as a healing hall for the
sea
dragons, Tera led her inside, showing her the way to where the sea
dragon
was waiting. It was then that Abby felt her first twinge of fear,
having
never worked on one of the breed before. Much less seen one, but she
was
going to try and help the beast anyway.

She could feel the waves of pain coming from the poor dragon even as
her
rider was stood there trying to calm her down.

"What is the dragon's name?" Abby asked Tera as the two moved closer.

"Riyanne," Sundellath's rider told her. "Her name is Riyanne."

"Eliase tell me what happen to your Riyanne," Abby asked as she moved
to
stand beside the female rider. "My name is Abby and I've had a fair
amount
of luck healing injured dragons. I'd like to look at your female if you
would trust me enough."

"You can trust her Eliase," Tera's voice came from behind them. "My
friend
here is a Master Dragonhealer from my old home land. I'll vouch for
Abby's
skills with healing. I've seen her heal dragons no one else would even
give a chance..."

Another rider called for Tera and the blonde turned to walk over to
them.

Abby didn't notice for her eyes were watching the girl's face, noticing
how white her own skin tone looked and realize that the rider had also
been injured. "You're hurt." She commented as the girl explained how
her
dragon had been injured.

Ojean arrived then, barely out of breath and handed her the bag she had
requested. She thanked him and turned back to the rider.

"I'll be fine healer. Please just take care of Riyanne first." Eliase
pleaded and Abby nodded. Proud that the rider's first concern was her
dragon. For without the dragon, there would be no pairing.

She looked around and saw a young girl half hidden in the shadows, and
motioned to her with her hand to come forward. When the girl made no
move
to obey, Abby's smile became more gentle and her voice coaxingly soft.
"Come here sweetie. It's okay. I need your help here for a moment while
I
look at this pretty sea dragon.."

Slowly the girl emerged out of the shadows looking all around her as if
expecting something Abby could only guess at. Still she came to stand
by
the healer and rider when nothing untold happened. Abby could see
bruises
on the girls arms and face and wondered who had mistreated her so
badly.
No wonder the poor girl had been afraid to come to her. When this was
over
she would find who had been responsible and.. make sure it never
happened
again. No one deserved to be mistreated like this girl had.

Being very careful not to make any moves that would startle the girl,
Abby
reached down into her bag and came back out with a small bottle filled
with a clear liquid and a cloth. She tipped the bottle over, spilling
some
of the liquid onto it and then making sure the girl was watching,
showed
her what she wanted her to do.

The girl nodded and reached to take the cleaning things from Abby, who
pointed at Eliase's arm. The girl nodded again which made Abby wonder
about her for she hadn't uttered one sound.

"If you could clean her arm and then put a clean cloth over the cut..
it
would be a big help," Abby voice was full of warmth and kindness as she
gave instructions. "I need to have a look at her dragon now."

She noticed a slight smile or maybe it was just a unconscious twitch
appear on the girls face, and smiled warmly as her hand squeezed the
girls
arm once in gratitude. Then she turned and moved closer to the sea
dragon.

"Tell me what happened," Abby told the rider to giver her something to
do
and keep her mind off her dragons pain.

After she had explain, and Abby made sure the young drudge was doing a
proper cleaning job of the rider's injuries, she turned back to the Sea
dragon.

She was about to place her hand on the sea dragons neck when she felt
herself being spun around and the air half left her body as she was
slammed up against something hard and unyielding.

That something turned out to be a fairly good looking blonde headed
male
with some of the widest shoulder Abby had seen in a long time. Abby was
about to demand he tell her what he thought he was doing, but the grin
on
his face was full of concern and her anger evaporated as quickly as it
had
come.

"I'm sorry to be so heavy handed with you M'lady, But I had to act
quickly
to spare you the shock of your life." The man told her, but he didn't
look
very sorry to Abby.

"While I appreciate your effort," Abby's return grin was a little
cocky, a
little flirty, and she made no move to escape the mans arms. "I'll let
you
in on a little secret. I've been dealing with dragons one way or
another
all my life and I've never been scared or *shocked* by anything they
do.
As a Dragonhealer that wouldn't be very helpful would it?"

"No M'lady Dragonhealer. I agree that that would not be a very good
thing," the man chuckled as if the healers words had amused him. "But
you
were about to place your hand on spot that would guaranty a very bad
shock. You see Sea Dragons are a bit different from you are used too
and
while I understand from my own fine fellow that you are a top notch
healer
of our friends... and you have my gratitude for being willing to help
out
when we are so short of Healers...Especially since I know you just
arrived
on our fair shores... There are a few things you will need to know
about
the differences in land and sea dragons or you could be harmed.. No
matter
how well your intentions are."

Abby frowned, nodding her head in understanding his caution.

"I should have thought about that," they heard a amused voice say from
behind them and as if noticing for the first time the position they
were
in, Abby still in Corwin's arms pressed tight against his length..
stepped
back and he allowed her to go with a wicked wink and grin.

"Humm.. Not being a healer yourself, rider Tera, I don't see why you
should have thought about it," Corwin said, bowing slightly from the
waist. Then he turned back to Abby. "If you are still willing to help
I'll
be happy to explain the differences, and show you where not to touch
her... But then I must get back to the meeting I was in."

"If you would be so kind," Abby could have kicked herself for the
huskiness in her tone. She was well past the crush stage in her life.
Besides, there was a dragon to heal and that -was- her life's work.

Abby reached into her bag again while the Dragonrider spoke. He had
introduced himself as Corwin, Syngnath's rider and leader of the
Warren's
Sea Dragon Wing. He then very carefully explained the differences
between
the two breeds of dragons and showed her where it was safe to touch.

When he was sure she understood, Corwin stepped back to stand next to
Tera
and watched as the Master Dragonhealer stepped forward and placed her
hand
on the injured Sea Dragon.

"Should I get Syngnath in here to act as a go between?" he asked the
rider
beside him.

"No need," Tera shook her head as she watched her friend in action.
"Abby
can handle it." She told him, hoping her friends talent with hearing
dragons extended to the Sea Dragons.

"How so?"

"Abby has a unique talent when it comes to her healing. She is able to
*hear* the dragon she is working on. They know she is trying to help
them
and ease their pain. It's sort of like they join their minds to her
when
she touches them. They *listen* and *speak* to her which is why she is
so
good at what she does."

"If Dragons will talk to her, how come she wasn't searched?" Corwin
asked,
and Tera could tell he was impressed.

"She never wanted to be a rider and I think the dragons knew that and
understood. Both of her brothers.. were dragonrider's, but all Abby
ever
wanted to be was a healer. She is much respected in the lands we came
from
for her ability to heal even those dragons that no other healer would
have
given a chance to survive."

Abby, didn't even notice the others from the moment her hand touched
the
warm skin of the sea dragon. She began to softly croon, a sound she had
found helped to settle a dragons fears the first time she came near
them.
Then she began to speak.

<<Don't be afraid little one. I am only here to help you get well
again.
Will you allow me to have a look where you were hurt so I can make you
feel better?>>

The large head swung around slowly to watch the strange woman with the
soft mind touch. The color of her eyes seem to settle back to normal
bit
by bit.

>The other dragon's say you are a kind human,< came the weak reply. >You
may help me.<

<<Thank you Ryainne, I will try to be very gentle and not cause you any
more pain then I can help.>>

She moved slowly around the beast until she came to the injured spot,
keeping one hand in contact with Ryianne every step of the way. Abby
kept
talking to her, telling her how brave she was and how deeply her rider
loved her and needed her to be well again. Soon the beast was making
soft
crooning sound of pleasure as Abby's touch seem to drawl the pain away
from her and it was replaced with a sense of well being.

When she got to the injury, Abby saw it wasn't as bad as she had fear.
The
spear had gone in deep and torn the flesh in a jagged pattern, but it
had
missed anything vital. Ryainne had been very lucky there.

She turned back to the drudge who had helped bandage Eliase's arm and
called her to her. "Please bring my bag," she asked. She had seen
something in the way the girl hand handled the cleaning and decided to
test her out by using her to assist in the healing.

"I need you to get me another clean cloth and pour more of the cleaning
fluid on it for me... soak it good." She told the girl, making sure she
spoke turned towards her face so the girl could see she was speaking to
-her- and then took the rag from her hand when she complied.

When she had used it up and the cloth was covered in the dragons dried
blood, Abby had the drudge repeat the request with a new damp cloth,
and
then had her go into the bag and find a spool of thread and her package
of
needles. The healer was impressed with how quickly the girl followed
instructions and how nimble her fingers were with the small detail
work.

When Abby had finally stitched up the wound, she placed a large thick
pad
over it to keep it clean and then applied a stick substance that would
keep the pad in place and dry, even if the dragon went for a swim.

>>I'm all done now Ryianne. And I'm so proud of you for being so brave
while I stitched you up. Now I want you to rest for a few days so you
don't tear the stitches I put in and I'll come back and see you soon to
check on it.<<

Ryainne thanked the healer by blowing softly on her and then looked to
her
rider who came running up to hug her dragon's neck.

"Oh thank you Healer Abby," Eliase gushed (gushed??) and hugged her
dragon
even harder. "Thank you!"

Abby left the pair to comfort each other, meaning to clean up her mess,
but was pleasantly surprised to find everything already picked up and
loaded into a woven bag she kept for such occasions. Even her supplies
had
been placed back in their designated spots in her bag. Looking up she
saw
the drudge standing there holding out her hand palm up. In her hand was
the needle Abby had used to close the wound.

Thinking she understood what the girl wanted. Abby reached in the bag
and
pulled out a different bottle and after opening the lid, she held it up
and motioned for the girl to place the needle inside. It would be safe
there until Abby could boil it clean.

"Thank you for your help," the healer told the girl, using both her
voice
and her hands to sign her words like Kay had once taught her to do.

She saw a flicker of awareness in the girls eyes, and wondered if she
had
been right assuming the girl was deaf.

"There you are you stupid idiot." An angry voice shouted, causing them
all
to turn and look at the bellowing male entering the cave. "Playing
around
while there is work to do. If you want to stay in this Warren then
you'll
get back to work.

Abby quickly stepped in front of the drudge and turned to face the one
she
tagged as a bully. "Please lower your voice we have sick and injured in
here. And mind you manners when speaking to my friend here."

The Bully gave a short loud laugh. He didn't know this woman, never
seen
her around the warren, so she wasn't anyone he needed to be concerned
about. "That Stupid gits your friend huh.... Well she'd done here and
has
work to do and better get to it if she knows what's good for her."

Abby stole a quick look at the girl and decided she wasn't going to let
her go with this man. For all she knew he had been the one beating her.

"Sorry but she's going nowhere except with me," Abby spoke up in her
best
healer voice. She reached for the girl's hand and began to lead her
towards where Tera was waiting for her. Corwin was no where to be seen,
so
she thought he'd gone back to his meeting.

When the bully stepped in front of her, blocking her path, Abby didn't
give ground. Her dark eyes met his. "Get out of my way."

"G'ret... Move aside," Tera's made her voice heard. "You wouldn't want
me
telling Jerram or Tara you were bring rude to our new Healer and her
fosterling, now would you."

"She's no more the healer's fosterling then you are," he looked from
the
rider to the new healer.

"Oh and how do you know that?" Tera asked.

"Well... the drudge was here before the healer got here," he said as if
that should have been obvious for anyone to see.

"Oh and how do you know my fosterling didn't go missing... kidnapped or
some such that I didn't come here *after* hearing that my fosterling
had
been found?" Abby countered, wondering if he was really as dumb as he
looked, or if it was just an act.

Abby pushed by him then as her words seem to stump him.

"Come on sweetie. Let's get you us something to eat shall we?"
