Day 12, 0 dark thirty

[snip]

"I just got the word from Deeva. Coo is obviously frantic! I'll help
you look!" He stated with a sad smile. They hadn't taken more then a
few steps when Breezy was accosted by an hysterical blonde.

"Breezy!!" Amy cried out. "Link is missing! I don't know what happened!
Once minute he was on the bucket brigade the next he was gone." Tears
from the stinging smoke and frantic worry streaked her cheeks. "I was
organizing the Mini Wing and when I looked back he wasn't there. No one
knows where he went and Cloud can't hear him! He said something about
the gas to Belle but he's so worried he's not making any sense! You've
got to help me find him!"

[end snip]

Breezy blinked in surprise searching her mind as to where the courier
mind be, then it dawned on her. The dining hall was intact because
someone had turned off the gas, at least she hoped that was the
situation. If not they could be in even bigger trouble, " You don't
suppose that Link shut off the main gas valve?"

Amy after hearing this started off. "Amy wait! You're not going by
yourself, besides you are going the wrong way! I know a shortcut that
we can take!" Breezy called out hoping that with all the destruction
they would be able to get through

Jeryn appeared at the door with dripping towels, "You might need these!
Just in case..."

Breezy smiled gratefully taking the offered bundle. "Dev, you and Deeva
help Coo find Delilah! Amy and I will go look for Link. K'tarr, Loki
and Galen are getting things under control where they are at, and if
you get a chance, check in with Lord Tallon and see how Jeneve is
doing! Take care of yourself and use the towels so your aren't
breathing in too much of the ash." She added with a slight cough
handing him a couple towels. The fires were starting to burn out now
but the air was thick with smoke and ash and her throat already felt
like it had been seared through more times then she could count.

Day 12 O dark thirty {Else where in the warren}

Has it ended? The smoke left trails up into the ever lighting black
skies. Did all this really happen just a few hours ago? Embers of wood
still were red and burning down. Little bits of gray smoke blew in the
light wind. There was still so much movement going on but it was all a
blur to the scholar.

Fire, ice.....Bazil had watched a dragon that breathed ice not fire
help put it out. The little brown was amazed at how the white dragon
did that. His mother had only ever talked about breathing fire. The
white ice breather was so cool. Bazil was now leading his rider though
the mess of what was left of the office on the ground. Little Bazil was
trying to straighten out all that was being said... so much shouting
and yelling was going on. He felt a sudden tug on his tail. He tilted
his head back, his rider was on the ground. His hands were plunged deep
into a pile of burning embers. [Rider!] He pushed him back. [What are
you doing?]

Jocko rubbed the bridge of his nose, trying to ease a growing headache,
and rubbed his burning eyes. *The stones...I got from the cave... they
have to be here....*

[Little things like that are gone...lost in all this burning wood and
stone.] He started to nudge his rider to get him up. [They are lost to
be found again someday.] He paused. [By someone else...now get up!]

Jocko slowly got up. [We need to help the others...people are lost and
hurt.]

*I can't help find anyone... I can't see much.* He grumped.

[You will sit and put your hands into burning ash but won't help find
the people of this warren?]

His stomach growled. *Sorry Bazil... your right.*

[Grab my tail and come on....] He thumped his tail on to Jocko's hip.
He grabbed it and started to follow the little brown.

Bazil went as fast as he could with out making his rider fall. The bag
that was hanging around his neck was starting to make his side and wing
itch. [Rider take this off me!]

*What is....* He reached and pulled it off his neck. *Its my bag...
with...my notes! You had it the hole time?* He exclaimed as they
walked.

[Yes...remember you put it around my neck before we left the office,
then you forgot to take it off...]

*Sorry. I owe you my friend.*

[Yes you owe me... I think a .... hey there's the cookie human!!!] He
started to pull faster.

*Cookie human.* Bazil looked up and squinted the best he could. He
could make out who it was.
They were a few feet a way when Jocko realized it was Breezy, Amy, and
Jeryn. *Oh cookie human.* Bazil stopped just short of Breezy. She
looked down at the little brown then to Jocko, who was still holding
his tail now he had a small smile. "Umm...he wants to help find who
ever is missing?" Bazil jerked his tail. "Oh and he wants more
cookies."

Breezy couldn't contain the relieved laughter that bubbled up. "Well, I
must say, you two are quite a sight for sore eyes. Bending down she
stroked the eager snout of the hatchling an idea formulating in her
mind. "You know little fellow you most certainly can help! And I do
believe Uncle may have a few extra treats laying around?" She added
lifting a brow at the rotund cook.

Amy's worry was plainly evident as she tapped Breezy's shoulder and
began to pace, "We've got to go!"

Just then Jeryn appeared with a small bag of cookies and sweet breads
and managed to hand them to Jocko without loosing his fingers as
Bazil's jaws were already snapping in anticipation. "You kids be
careful!" He exclaimed, his brow furrowed in concern.

"Sureeee! No problem!" Breezy mumbled sarcastically under breath. With
a roll of her eyes she gave the older man a little grin. "I'm always
careful!" To which the cook snorted, sighed, then waved them off before
stepping back inside.

Amy immediately started off causing Breezy to grab her by the arm.
"This way Amy!" Making sure each of them had wet towels, she threw hers
over her shoulder and headed into the smoky haze making sure the young
scholar and this hatchling were close behind. The cool wetness soaking
through her shirt felt good but she knew it wouldn't stay that way for
long.

The young blond wife's worry grew, not only was it hard to see it
seemed to take forever for them to get to where they where going. She
constantly worried about Link, although many joked about how he cowered
from her when she put her foot down, every one knew that she loved him
with all her. She didn't know what she would do if some thing happened
to him.

Jocko put his hand on Amy's shoulder and gave her a reassuring nod.

It was a circuitous route for the ragtag group as the damage to the
warren was extensive leaving no clear path to anywhere. Breezy's eyes
stung like crazy from the gray haze that now clung to everything,
including the living.

Stopping to get her bearings the sight of two ash covered riders
carrying a litter appeared. Tears came to her eyes as she saw the
person on the litter was haphazardly covered and an arm dangled freely
from beneath it. How many dead, she thought to herself.

[More then you want to know.} Came the sad reply as another draconian
death cry sounded in the distance.

*Purity's rider?*

[No, but we still haven't found her.]

Making a right turn to avoid a huge pile of rocks Breezy sighed, partly
in sadness, partly in relief glancing back to see that her charges were
still with her. A little smile came to her face at the one-eyed
hatchling protectively trailing his rider. Even though he was visually
limited and would be considered somewhat disabled by human standards
Breezy knew that Mother Nature would take up the slack thus giving
Bazil a distinct advantage over the other dragons on some things. But
that was something that the pair would learn as their bond
strengthened, that is if they all managed to get out of this in one
piece.

A loud crash had the Wingleader jerking the blonde away and yelling for
the group to take cover as one of the outer support walls of a nearby
structure gave way. Huge stones broke free stirring up clouds of
glowing embers and ash. The group backed away and hearing the baby
dragon sneeze Breezy pulled out one of the extras towels that Jeryn had
given her and draped it over the end of Bazil's snout. He immediately
sneezed again sending it flying into the air. Smiling she handed it to
Jocko with a nod to replace it. "Trust me little guy this is for you
own good." They had enough problems without having to deal with a
dragon going into a sneezing fit, even a little one. Getting snotted on
was just plain nasty anyway, but dragon snot could cause some bad
burns, and it wasn't like they didn't have enough of that already. She
bit back a chuckle as the little spiked head jerked back and forth
quite fascinated at making the damp towel swing.

"Shit!" Breezy exclaimed jumping to swat out some hot embers that had
landed in Amy's long hair the rancid smell making her nose twitch.
"C'mon lets get moving."

[..]

The horrible carnage throughout the warren was catastrophic only a few
places had gone unscathed or had minimal damage. Cries of anguish,
human and dragon alike were heard as the group silently wound their way
through what was left of their home. If Breezy hadn't been here to
witness the event she would have thought she had just stepped into the
middle of a war zone. Death and destruction were all around them and
the wretched agony and helplessness she saw in the faces of the
survivors made her sick to her stomach. Despite her own search Coo kept
sending messages from the Alpha Wingleader and other riders as they
worked to regroup. Mentally expressing worry about Galen Coo finally
tracked him down and Molly let her know that her rider's mate was safe
for the moment. The soldier and the coal tenders had managed to secure
the coal bins. Breathing a sigh of relief Breezy continued on. If those
had gone up, that would have been the end of Norwall period

Rounding a curve the main entrance down into the boiler room came into
sight and the Wingleader's heart sank. Buried under tons of rock she
knew it would take days to clear it out even using the dragons. But
they didn't have days, time was of the essence. If Link was down there,
who was to say he was the only one and what condition they were in. Had
the night shift made it out in time? There was a back entrance that was
rarely used, hopefully it would still be passable.

Amy's cry of frustrated anguish had Breezy rubbing her chin in
contemplation. "Amy, calm down." She said quietly, "We don't even know
for sure if he's in there."

"He is, I just know it! Where else could he be?" She cried out
frantically trying to pull away a heavy boulder. "He would be back by
now. I would have seen him, he would have come looking for me...LINK!
LINK!"

"Amy stop!" Breezy yelled out over her calls for her husband. Grabbing
the blonde she pulled her back. "Amy calm down there's a back way!
We'll go see if it's still open!" Breezy commanded saying a silent
prayer that it was as she again led the group through the falling ash
and smoke.

The back entrance was in an obscure location and had always reminded
her of the entrance to Felicia's old fruit cellar. It was rarely used
except for cross venting when it got too hot for the workers. The two
entrances were perpendicular from each other for better ventilation,
but who was to say what kind of condition the inside would be like now.

As they moved away from the fiery glow darkness closed in around them
but there was still enough light to see that the back doors hadn't been
buried, in fact they were gone completely lying in splinters around the
opening. Breezy wasn't sure if that was a good sign or not. Had they
been smashed by falling rocks or from an explosion within? It was
getting too dark to tell. Amy almost knocked her over in her joy at
seeing the opening. "Is that it?" She cried out surging forward
stumbling over stones in her path.

"Amy be careful!" Jocko called out in a worried tone. "Breezy it's
getting darker!"

"I know." Looking around the redhead frowned, "With the fires dying
down it's going to be getting really hard to see at all soon.. "AMY!
You stop right there! It's too dangerous to go any further!" Peering
through the dim light she found a long board from the door still
somewhat intact. It was warm to the touch but not so hot she couldn't
hold it. "Stay here and watch her Jocko, and don't let her go in
there!" Climbing back over the rocks with her board until she found a
small fire burning that she could get close enough to.

Hurrying back the makeshift torch was a welcome sight and Amy
immediately headed for the dark opening. "Amy freeze!"

"WHAT NOW!" The blonde screamed turning on Breezy her blue eyes blazing
in angry worry.

"Come back here we're not going to take any changes!" Breezy commanded
forcefully. Recognizing the tone all to well Amy yet hesitated a moment
before backing away. Motioning for both the riders to get back Breezy
moved forward hearing the young woman frantically questioning the
scholar about the sanity of the Wingleader.

"Get down!" The redhead called out. Eyeing the opening and judging her
distance as best she could in the low light Breezy held her breath and
lobbed the fiery board into the entrance and ducked. After a few tense
moments and with no explosion forthcoming she rose to her feet.
"C'mon," she waved with a sigh of relief. With the one opening
impassable and no real airflow she didn't doubt there were still
pockets of gas so it was best not to take any chances.

The burning board lit up the entrance area and the quartet hurried down
the steps only to be stopped a few meters in. Rocks and twisted metal
barred their path. Amy choked back a sob as she stepped forward.
"Breezy, do something! LINK! LINK! CAN YOU HEAR ME!" She screamed at
the ominous barrier.

The redhead's eyes glazed over, *Sister, talk to Cloud, I need to know
what images he got from his rider!* A flood of color flashed in her
head so fast Breezy staggered grabbing the wall to support herself.
*Whoa, slow down! I need the very last thing that Cloud saw!* The blue
eyes narrowed as the image came to mind. It took her a bit to recognize
it and she couldn't hold back the groan.

"What is it?" Amy demanded, her voice filled with panic.

"He's in there alright." Breezy answered keeping her voice as even as
possible. Amy was close to losing it and that was the last thing they
needed to hear right now. From what she had received her guess was that
Link was on his way out and was somewhere near the main entrance. Which
unfortunately meant traversing almost the whole boiler room. Even
though it was pretty much a straight shot if this barrier was any
indication they could have a real problem getting to him. Time was
ticking away and the Wingleader knew she had to hurry. Since Cloud was
giving Coo the same message about Link that Purity was sending about
Delilah, it told her that they were both still alive, at least for the
moment. Unconscious though or they would have answered already. She
pushed away the unbidden thought that they could also be badly injured
or worse laying there bleeding to death.

Scooping up the crude torch Breezy began to inspect the mangled metal.
If it hadn't been for Bazil's childlike curiosity she would have never
seen the small opening. "Move it squirt, let me see what you got
there!" Kneeling down she found she had to almost lie down to inspect
the small opening. "It's not very big but it looks like it's open all
the way through."

Setting the torch out of the way she began to inch her way through on
her belly. Squeezing through the first obstruction into the inky
darkness Breezy realized this was not only foolhardy but just plain
dumb to try this without a light. Carefully she reached around in the
darkness crying out as she sliced her hand open on a piece of sharp
metal. Feeling the wet warmth of blood trickling through her fingers
Breezy answered the worried calls echoing from Amy and Jocko as she
wiggled back out.

[..] Back outside

Amy was beside herself at this point and Breezy knew if the blonde had
been able to fit into the opening there would be no holding her back.
Keeping the young wife busy was the best thing to do and Breezy sat on
the steps having Amy makeshift a bandage for her hand. It was probably
the only thing that kept her from loosing it completely at that point
and it gave Breezy a chance to think. The cut was deep and would
probably require a few stitches but the emergency doctoring would do
for now. She watched Jocko instead the barrier when a snuffling at her
leg made the little redhead look down. A crazy thought popped into her
head and she hoped she was right about that Mother Nature thing, as
that's why she'd had them come along in the first place. Of course she
never really expected to put it to the test, at least not yet.

The strips of torn towel had barely been knotted around Breezy's hand
when Amy leapt to her feet to again scream wildly for her husband. But
no answer came, and the young woman dissolved into tears slumping
against the stone wall.

Jocko immediately jumped forward to lend his support hugging the
hysterical blonde tightly as he gazed helplessly at Breezy through the
faint glow of their dying torch.

"Amy, I know you are worried! We all are.." Breezy said softly, then
her tone changed, growing hard. "But you gotta suck it up honey! You
are no good to Link if you fall apart on me now!" Looking from one to
the other then down at the hatchling, "Bazil, I've got a job for you!"
She smiled grimly and began to explain her idea.

[..]

It didn't take Amy to do as Breezy had bid and returned with real
torches, more wet towels, a flask of water and a shirt of Links. The
Wingleader was amazed at how fast she'd collected the items considering
the circumstances, but then if it had been Galen in there she knew her
feet would've probably sprouted wings.

Laying the towels carefully across Bazil's shoulders she then looped
the leather string of the flask over his neck. Giving the scaly snout
an affectionate rub Breezy smiled, "If you pull this off little guy,
I'll make sure you get all the cookies you'll ever want!" Looking at
Jocko, "He's the only one little enough to get in there safely. It's
going to be dark and the farther in he gets the darker it will be,
dragons have excellent night vision so even with one eye he'll be able
to see okay. That nose of his though will serve him a lot better then
two eyes put together. I have no idea how much damage there is in there
so he will have to be very careful. The problem is that none of the
dragons have never been inside here so they can't give him any sort of
image to go by, I can but it won't look the same with the damage, so
I'm going to have to walk him through this the best I can. He will have
to be very precise in what he is sending to Coo and you, so I can keep
him on track." Handing the young scholar the couriers worn shirt she
glanced down at the hatchling with a smile. "We'll just call you Bazil
the Bloodhound!" Gads, she hoped she wasn't making a mistake. Bazil was
a baby, he shouldn't have to be risking his life this young, but there
had already been a lot of sacrifice tonight regardless of age. It
wasn't supposed to be this way. One thing that was for sure, it was a
helluva fast way to grow up. Breezy's worry was that he was so young
and inexperienced that he would get in there and panic. Her only hope
was that the bond between the hatchling and his rider was a solid one,
or Bazil could easily get lost. The thought of explaining to the golden
queen that she had lost one of her babies sent a shiver through the
little redhead.

Seeing the look of apprehension on Jocko's face Breezy patted him
encouragingly on the shoulder, "Don't worry, he'll be okay. He really
wants to help, I know he can do this! You just really need to stay in
tuned with him." As an afterthought she tied a towel to the strap
holding the flask where the dragonette could reach it. "Tell him if he
has to sneeze, sneeze into the towel." She didn't add that if there
were still pockets of gas in there one spark even if it was in the form
of snot could blow them all to kingdom come. No sense in alarming the
fledging rider needlessly, Breezy figured she had enough worry for all
of them.

Jocko nodded and the three humans glanced at each other with
apprehensive but hopeful eyes as the little brown began his quest, the
young man letting out a deep sigh as the scaly tail disappeared from
view.

J'red's Office
Morning, Day 19

J'red perched on the edge of his desk and motioned for Barsel to close
the door behind him before he turned to Nerika. "Well, I think the
idea may have some applications. Now... tell me more about this
formation."

Nerika sat down next to Barsel...actually, she scooted her chair closer
to his until the two were almost touching. "They're like musical
notes," she said, dipping a pen in the inkwell and expertly drawing
five parallel lines and then adding dots between them. "This is the
formation I was thinking of," she said. "Like notes on a rising and
then falling scale...or like the position of a person's fingers if they
were positioned on the musical bar. One leader, a second just a bit
behind and to the left, then two other dragons and riders on the flanks
a bit farther behind. They can all fire forward if need be, or the two
rearward pairs can crisscross and pick off any wraiths that try to come
at them from behind. It would save many casualties, I should think."

J'red saw the composition and was rather impressed by the implications.
"Yes, I see! Wonder why no one here ever thought of this before now...
Now, when you were in battle, how many of these arrangements do you
have and how are they aligned?"

Nerika blushed a bit. "Um...well...I don't know that it has ever been
tried in combat. It was something a few of us thought up in training
at Jasra, and the Swordmaster Jerram proposed that it be adopted on a
test basis, but that hadn't been done by the time I left. He thought
it would work too....and he would know, he has a lot of combat
experience. He even led the wing at Geode."

J'red leaned back, "Hmm... So..." Then his eyes lit up with
possibilities, "This might be something you could work on. I'd like to
have you run some trials. Get some volunteers." J'red nodded as if
agreeing with his own decision.

Nerika turned to the rider sitting next to her. "Oh, Barsel, do you
want to be in it?" she asked excitedly, her eyes fixing eagerly on him
as she managed to lean in just a bit closer to him.

"Uh..." Barsel blinked, totally unsure why he was even here.

J'red jumped in, "Of course he's going to be a part of it." It was
just what he might need to get him to be a better rider. "It'll be a
challenge."

"Uh..." Barsel could only nod. "Yeah."

"Good. Then it is settled," J'red smiled. "Nerika and Barsel, you
have patrol tomorrow, but you can line up volunteers for the following
day and we can get rolling on this new formation. Keep me abreast of
how it is progressing. I expect you to work closely together, and with
me."

Nerika got up and, without thinking, took Barsel by the hand and led
him out of J'red's office. "I think we should start practicing this
afternoon," she said. "We could get Mara as our third person, and
....well, do you have anyone in mind you'd like to have participate?"
She couldn't remember when she'd felt like this, certainly not since
before she'd joined. She tried to think of the details she remembered
from her talk with Jerram, but it seemed that all she could see at the
moment were Barsel's wondrous eyes.

"Um...maybe we could go to the dining hall and, er, plan?" She figured
the place wouldn't be very crowded right now.

Barsel glanced once back at J'red as he was summarily led away, to what
felt like his execution. He had no idea what he had done to be
suddenly volunteered for this. "Sure... dining hall..." He could use
some ale or wine.

They walked along the edge of the green to the dining hall, while they
discussed which riders might be willing to participate.

[Tag - Kris for Mara, Morgie for R'han. Any other volunteers?]

Day 19
  Early Morning

Matt threw the covers off got out of bed, ignoring the cold stone
floor as he walked over to the window. He looked out into the predawn
gloom, his eyes searching for answers in the shadows from the
mountains. The sun was just a glow in the sky, maybe half an hour
left before it finally came over the mountain. Matt found this time
of day to be the most peaceful, most people asleep, no one to intrude
in on his thoughts. Well, atleast that used to be the norm.

After the bonding, Matt had been swept up into the Warren, his scant
belongings brought up from the tent in the carnival. He had been
deposited into an expansive room that had a large shallow basket next
to the lagre bed. Large windows overlooked the green and river. Matt
had panicked and almost climbed out of the windows to make a run for
it, but that woke up the little dragon sleeping int he basket next to
his bed. That ended his thoughts of running.

A rustle and scraping noise announced little Ialir's waking, and the
tiny dragon sent out a thought to his rider.

<I'm hungry.>

Matt turned around, an irritated look on his face. He was still not
used to talking in his mind, so he still responded verbally. "Again?
You just ate four hours ago. This would be the eigth meal in less then
 a day."

<I know, I'm still hungry.>

Matt growled in irritation, then walked over to the chest at the end of
his bed and opened. he grabbed a thin shirt and quickly threw it on,
then helped the little dragon out of the basket. The two walked over
to the door, and the baby walked through once Matt had opened it. They
began their long walk downt he hall, stopping frequently to let the
young dragon rest.

"You ok?" he asked the dragon on one stop, watching as the baby
breathed heavily.

<Yes, still hungry though. Can you walk any faster then that?> the
dragon responded.

Grumbling to himself, Matt began walking down the maze of stairs and
corridors that made up the warren. Every once in a while he would stop
and take out a map from his pocket, frowning as he attempted to
remember which room Merissa had pointed out as the dining hall. The
marks that she called words meant nothing to him, and many times he
stood for quite some time trying to figure it out.

Finally he caught a whiff of hot bread, and turned at the next
corner. He was now at the level of the Green, and he could see the
dining hall farther down the corridor from him. A few people were
already in there, and in the corner Matt saw Merissa. She had set her
dishes to the side and was looking over some papers in front of her.

Without asking or invitation, Matt made his way over and pulled out the
chair across from her, sitting down heavily with a huff.. Ialir sat
and looked around for a moment, then gave a very dragonish grin as
someone approached with a large bowl of raw meat.

"So Lady Merissa, care to have a conversation with me?" Matt asked.

Merissa looked up at the young man before her, as if surprised by the
interruption. When she recognized the face of the young man whose
hatchling had gone searching for him, she was again surprised. She'd
have thought he had better things to be doing than having a leisurely
chat with the warrenlady. But then again, if Gob was the one running
training. who knew what the boy had in mind. Merissa wondered if
putting Gob in charge was such a good idea.

She shrugged, "Care to have a conversation? " She queried, then
added, "What about?"

Mat scratched his shaggy chin, his elbows on the table. Before
speaking, he reached out and grabbed an orange from the bowl of fruit
int he middle of the table, sticking his thumb into it and pulling the
peel off.

"Well, it's about a fella I believe works for you, goes by the name
Jael I think. You see, when I worked in the circus, I noticed some
things about my boss, big fella, goes by the name Bubba. He would set
off my 'bump', little something that warns me. Saved my life more
then once in the past, so I tent to trust it. Anyways, he made by
bump itch, and thats unusual for a person to do that to me. Shifty
eyes, mean, nasty fella. But he got on real good with the Jael
person, they went and talked for a good long time. I figured, person
gets on too well with my boss, they might be as bad as him, so I
followed." Matt said, pausing to pop an orange slice into his mouth.
He rolled his eyes at the taste, chewing loudly.

Ialir paused in his eating, raising his head high enough to sniff at
the orange in Matt's hand, then wrinkling his nose.

<Yuck, how can you stand that stuff?> he sent to Matt.

Merissa looked at him skeptically, after all, she didn't really know
anything about Matt, either. But Jael didn't always pick his friends
wisely, so she listened to what Matt said. "I'll keep my eyes open,
thanks for the warning." She wasn't all that worried about Bubba.
He seemed harmless enough - a bit slow-witted, perhaps, and a bit of a
"Mama's Boy" by the way he was so concerned about the missing Elsa.
Jael, however, might take advantage of the man's concern and feed it
with lies.

Shaking his head, Matt finished the orange. "No no, I don't think you
are getting me Lady. Yes, I can tell by the expression on your face
that this chap Jael isn't too smart, but he is smart enough to have
some serious hate for.... hmm, what was his name.... ah, J'red. I
don't know what happened between them, but I have seen that look
before, and it never ends nice." he finished, grabbing an apple. He
was about to say more when a thought suddenly hit him, jolting him
upright in his chair like a bolt of lightning. His eyes narrowed as
he looked at Merissa, and he leaned close.

"Ok, you swung me in with that dragonrider stuff, and I know that I am
bonded with little Ialir, but realize one thing; I was raised on the
street. Y'all got a problem on your hand, and it's a lot more
dangerous then you think. I wouldn't be surprised if people started
falling over dead. I don't follow rules because I don't know how, and
I'm gonna do what I think is necessary." Matt said, his face devoid of
emotion. Then, with a sudden wink and smile, he stood up, grabbed
another orange, and walked out of the hall, the small white dragon
trailing behind.

  --------------------------

Summary: Matt can't sleep, so gets up. Ialir promptly demands more
food, so the two head off in search of the dining hall. Once there,
they join Merissa without asking and Matt unloads. They have 'idle'
conversation, and Matt walks out, leaving behind more questions then
answers.

[DL-D] Oiled Before The First Flying Lesson
  Day 30
  Early Morning
  On The Green

The training of the new dragon riders was going well it seemed.
Sharees had been enlisted to do the job for T'rell who was already
taxed. Today however was going to be the first flying day, and not long
from now each will need to be assigned to a wing. Already people were
gathering at the green to watch. At least the dragons had grown too big
now to crowd the halls. Even now she could remember the cook screaming
about the trainees and their dragonets taking over the kitchen and the
eating up the evening dinner. It wouldn't be so bad except one of the
twins dragons found the barrel of mead.

Star woke early, as usual for her. She made sure Sarette was fed,
then went to the Dining Hall to eat her breakfast. She sat alone in the
corner, eating quickly, as she wanted to get Sarette's scales oiled
before their first flying lesson.

She watched as other riders entered the Dining Hall and seat
themselves at various tables. Star smiled at a few of them, as she
finished her breakfast. She then returned her tray and silently walked
out.

Star stopped to retrieve the oil and rags, before heading towards the
lake.

*Sarette? Meet me down by the lake...I'd like you to get your bath,
and oil your scales before before our first flying lesson. I hope
you've stayed out of mischief while I ate.* Star told Sarette.

{Of course I've stayed out of mischief...when have you known me to
get into trouble?} Sarette replied with a mental chuckle.

*I can remember a few times...Precious One!* Star said as she
strolled across the lush Green, heading towards the lake.

{Oh...yeah that's right!} Sarette replied as she gave a mental sigh.
Star could see Sarette just landing at the edge of the lake. Sarette
began splashing around in the water as she waited for Star.

Star gave a mental laugh as she watched her purple dragnet splash
within the water. She finally made it to the edge and watched Sarette
for a moment as she bathed.

Star sat on the bank and waited until Sarette was finished, sitting
the oils and rags next to her.

Sarette finally came out of the water and settled herself on the bank
next to Star, {Were you waiting on me?} she asked Star playfully.
*It's ok Precious...are you ready to be oiled now?* Star asked
Sarette.
  {Sure am!} Sarette replied.

Star smiled and grabbed the oil and rags, then stood up. She first
dried the water from Sarette's scales, then applied the oil from her
nose, to her feet and wings, to her tail tip.

She continued this until the purple scales gleamed in the sunlight,
*You sure have grown a lot! It's taking me longer to oil your scales
now then it did the first time I oiled you.* Star told Sarette, giving
a mental laugh as she found this statement rather funny.

{Me? I'm as I always was!} Sarette replied to Star.
This time Star laughed aloud at Sarette's innocence.
*Yeah, with alot of extra feet added to you.* Star said jokingly to
Sarette.

Star turned to see people gathering on the Green for the first flying
lesson, which was about to begin at any moment. Star really didn't want
to be late for their first lesson, but she still needed to put away the
oil and rags.

As she turned back to the purple dragon gleaming in the sunlight, she
too was looking towards the green as some of the dragnets had already
arrived.

*You go, while I run and take care of these things...I'll meet you
there in a few moments.* She told Sarette as she started to run back
the way she had originally came from.

  {Ok...but hurry!} Sarette replied.
  *I will!* Star replied back.

Star hurried past the onlookers, that stood upon the Green. When she
replaced the oil and rags in their respectable places, she raced back
to the Green.

By the time she reached the Green, she was nearly out of breath as
she stepped forward to stand next to Sarette. Thankfully, only a few of
the other newly joined riders were there, and their instructor hadn't
arrived yet. She gave a sigh of relief, as she realized that she was
not late.

Star placed her hand on Sarette's neck and waited patiently for the
rest to arrive.

  Summary:

[DL-D] Oiled Before The First Flying Lesson
  Day 30
  Early Morning
  On The Green

Star woke early as usual this morning, and made sure Sarette was
eating first before she went to eat her breakfast.

She then went to the Dining Hall and quickly ate her breakfast, then
silently left the Dining Hall, as other riders entered.

Star retrieved the oil and rags then met Sarette down by the lake,
and watched the purple dragonet bathe herself. It took her longer than
usual to oil the dragonet's scales as she realized how big Sarette had
gotten. No longer a hatchling now, and growing like a weed.

When she finished the oiling, she joked with Sarette then realized
that if she did not hurry, she'd be late for their first flying lesson.
As she ran off, she asked Sarette to meet her on the Green and she'd
be back shortly.

When she finally arrived on the Green, she noticed a few other newly
joined riders were there, but their instructor was not. She gave a sigh
of relief, as she waited for the others to arrive.
