Day 30

<Snip>

T'rell, meanwhile, had found Pandora in the crowd and slipped in beside
her. "Looks like I made it back just in time!" he whispered, putting an
arm around her waist and following up with a kiss as she turned to look
at him. "Have I missed anything?"

<End>

"Not yet!" The queenrider answered a bit too fervently inwardly trying
to conquer the penetrating fear that came from being around the
dragons. No matter how hard she'd tried to work through it, for some
reason it wouldn't completely go away. Not even her closeness with
Almantha had helped. But then Almantha wasn't like a normal dragon, for
all her fierce posturing the copper queen was more like a petulant
child then anything and a large one at that.

Most of the dragons respectfully gave her a wide berth and after
several fainting mishaps, Flerrion had learned to avoid scaring her
senseless by announcing himself much in the same way Samson did. The
gentle giant was only looking for his usual treat, and hadn't really
meant to scare her so badly but it had been quite early in the morning.
She'd woken from a fitful night of dark dreams to find Flerrion's huge
yellow eye only inches from her face. What had happened next was the
last straw for T'rell and she was surprised he hadn't had the stone
mason's block up her window too. Still half asleep she'd panicked and
not only kneed and clawed her way across the sleeping T'rell to get
away from the 'horrible one-eyed monster,' she'd taken all the blankets
with her. It had been a rather cold morning much to the sleepy
Wingleader's consternation. It was still in debate as to which had been
worse, the fright Flerrion had given her, or the severe scolding the
nude T'rell had given him.

A little smile came to her face at the remembered vision but it was
still not enough to quiet the butterflies fluttering in her stomach
each time one of the dragons stretched or flapped it's wings. Being
part of the assembly like this was always hard and not in a million
years did she want to be here, but Pandora knew she had no choice.
Despite everything that had happened for the present she was still
Thea's second and was expected to be by her side during occasions such
as this. T'rell's presence was a small measure of comfort but not
enough to keep her knees from shaking. Sliding her arm around his waist
for support he draped his arm across her shoulder and smiled down at
her, thankfully taking the movement for a display of affection and not
one of fright. She didn't want him to know how scared and worried she
was at this moment.

As the hatchlings moved into position she lowered her head staring hard
at the ground. She just couldn't watch.

"Weya's going first." The Wingleader said casually watching the takeoff
area. Unconsciously, Pandora's gaze dropped and her fingers dug into
his side and before she knew what was happening T'rell's face was bent
down next to hers.

"What are you looking at?" He questioned curiously.

"My feet!" She answered in a rushed whisper.

Turning his face so they were almost nose to nose, "What's wrong with
your feet?"

"Nothing! They are on the ground!"

The brief glance she gave him brought an amused knowing smirk from the
Wingleader and he gave her arm a gentle squeeze. "Pandora, this is just
part of the.."

"If the Gods had wanted us to fly they would have given us wings!"

The man chuckled, pulling her closer he nuzzled the soft raven locks
with his cheek, "They did, and this is just part of the training of
every rider! Well almost every rider!" He added with a deepening grin.

"That doesn't count!" She exclaimed her head snapping up to meet his
smile. Her eyes widened as over his shoulder she saw some of the
hatchlings leap off the ledge. "And I'm not watching!" She exclaimed
dropping her head again.

"That's dumb you have to watch!

"No I don't!"

"Yes you do!"

"Nope!" Pandora could feel him fighting back the laughter and could've
gladly punched him.

"You know you can't stare at your feet forever!" T'rell chuckled.

"Yes I can!" She answered biting her bottom lip. It was hard enough
watching the adult dragons come and go, but the babies...

"Aw c'mon Panda, nothing's going to happen! You did fine with the
hatchlings when they were little! Just watch a few of them and you'll
see it's okay! They know you, they expect you to watch, especially
Weya!"

Squinching her eyes tightly shut she pushed against the finger that was
now gently forcing her chin upward. "Idon'twannu! Idon'twannu!
Idon'twannu!" She squeaked in a tiny voice. "Besides when they were
little, they were littler then me and couldn't fly! Now they're so much
bi..."

T'relll laughed, "C'mon open your eyes!" He coaxed in a teasing in a
tone that set her teeth on edge.

Jerking her chin free the jr. queenrider met his gaze defiantly, "Fine
you win!" she hissed irritably. Straightening her shoulders Pandora's
gaze snapped upward just in time to see one of the twins go off the
ledge.

The hatchling dropped downward like a heavy stone and Pandora's eyes
widened and the

dark-haired beauty turned a definite shade of green. Her hands flew to
her mouth as she gasped in horror and flung herself around to bury her
face into T'rell's armpit. She didn't see Emil spread his wings and
soar upward, nor did she want to.

Nearby the blacksmith frowned as he watched his twin. Catching the eye
of the startled Wingleader Lexi shook his head with a deep sigh
wondering if Panda would ever get over this odd fear of hers, and where
the heck it came from in the first place.

[..]

Sitting high on the cliffs with several of the other Beta dragons Rose
thoughtfully snapped her claws much in the same way as the woman on her
back snapped her fingernails. "Seems like it's been forever, doesn't
it?" Sam spoke quietly to the man on the dragon next to her.

"Yeah it does, but the rush only gets better and better!" Seth chuckled
in reply eyeing the woman next to him.

Sam leaned back and casually draped her leg over the pommel, the
movement of the shapely appendage bringing admiring glances from a few
of the other riders gathered up on the lofty perch. Seth arched a brow
as she crossed her arms then slowly ran her long fingernail across her
lips in contemplation.

The smoldering green eyes narrowed as she glanced over at him and asked
in a throaty whisper "We're we ever that young, that green?" Her words
brought a faint grunt from the black. [I'm not getting older, I'm
getting better, and I was never green!]

Lifting her face skyward Sam inhaled deeply reveling in the crisp
morning air and the warmth of the sun upon her face. It was good to be
back even though it was not the same as when she'd left. The struggles
the warren had faced shown clearly in the morning light and she was
surprised at the amount of burnt and battle scarred ground in and
around the warren there was. The rumors they'd heard had been
understated and had not prepared either of them for this. Sadly, some
of her former wingmates had been severely or mortally wounded and
seeing it from above like this made her pause. The influx of refugees
was almost more then the warren could handle. Small tent city's
littered the inside of the crater to overflowing and the only reason
she'd been given any decent kind of quarters is because she was a rider
and could reach the cliff apartments, which was about the only place
that wasn't full. Yet, as grim as the situation was the warren people
did what they always do and that was to find something good to
celebrate and a first hatchling flight was exactly that, cuts, bruises,
ten point gainers and all. Tonight there would be a party.

[..]

The first rush of exhilaration when Gumdrop had dropped off the ledge
had Molina grinning from ear to ear. Everything had gone well and as
the hatchlings had circled and flapped their way through the initial
flight she had found herself waving shakily at Star who was also aloft.
Never in her life could she have imagined such a wonderful feeling.

<I told you, you'd like it!> The bright yellow hatchling chirped
happily. Rolling to her right Gumdrop lost her balance momentarily and
dropped like a rock for a several feet until she got her equilibrium
back and soared upward once again. Molina's eyes were huge as she
clutched the saddle horn debating on if the contents of her stomach
were going to stay there.

**Ummm yes this is nice but I think we can go down anytime now!**

<Land? Hmmmm... Gumdrop reflected cautiously. <Do you remember what
Chamelle's rider said about landing?>

**What???** Molina exclaimed, her eyes getting wider. **You remember
don't you!**

<Ummm, well sort of...but I thought you might've...>

**Ohmygod! We're gonna die!** The young woman's hands flew to her face
then quickly gripped the pommel again as the hatchling dipped slightly
throwing her off balance. It was a good thing for saddle straps.

<We're not going to die rider! It can't be that hard!> Gumdrop
exclaimed cheerily.

Unfortunately, the yellow's foreclaws dug into the soft ground first
and the pair went tumbling head over heel. Molina was jerked in the
straps like a rag doll as the small dragon did her best to stay upright
and not crush her rider. The grass on the green was still slick from
the morning dew and the two went sliding out of control. Thrown against
the hard saddle Molina grunted as the air was knocked out of her,
finally after what seemed like an eternity Gumdrop finally came to a
sprawling stop directly at the feet of her parents and their riders.

Fortunately the two managed to avoid major injury and even though the
world was spinning like crazy Molina somehow managed to unbuckle the
strap holding her and slid ungracefully to the ground with a loud
omphf. Her eyes were still rolling as she peered up at the elegant
Warrenlady and said the first thing that came to mind, "Oops!"

NRPG: Just a little catchup fun.
