Anti-intellectualism in fandom

by Lee Ratner <LBRatner@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Jan 31, 2008 at 03:53 AM

About a month ago, I attended an anime convention in NYC. One of
the panels
at that convention was about academia and anime/manga. The people
conducting
the panel said something rather interesting, that most of the
resistance towards intellectual
criticism of anime and manga comes from fans rather than
intellectuals. Fans often hold
a position that this is just a fun hobby and it should not be subject
to deep scrutiny.

I've noticed something similar in other fandoms as well. Slate.com's
chief movie
reviewer is a woman named Dana Stevens. Anybody who reads the Fray,
the reader
comment section, will note that Dana Stevens is not particularly liked
by a certain segment
of the population, fans of movies like 300 or any other fannish type
movie because they do not'
seem to like her cultural analysis of the movies they like, insisting
that they are only movies.

Apparently there is a slice of fandom that is more than a little
anti-intellectual and really
can't stand cultural analysis of fannish movies. If I have to guess
why, I'd say they do not
like what such analysis reveals about themselves.

     Any other opinions/observations?
