Abortion is a comparatively minor sin, according to the Bible. (And it 
isn't a sin at all in many cases. If a pregnant woman is an Amelekite or 
a had been raped within city limits, you're supposed to kill her, which 
also constitutes an abortion.) Big sins, like gathering sticks on 
Saturday, are capitol offences. Beating a pregnant woman enough to kill 
the conceptus, embyro or foetus, is considered a property crime, to be 
dealt with by paying a fine to the husband.

Why not not abstain to atone for a big sin, like gathering sticks on 
Saturday? Can you atone for gathering sticks on Saturday, by abstaining 
from gathering sticks on Monday?
