Part of it may be a matter of using a catchall email address. 

When I was running my own mail server, the number of spam messages going
to
foo@[EMAIL PROTECTED]
 where foo was some name that never existed on the server,
or
strangely enough, was "some real name + some crap" (or vice versa)"
greatly
exceeded the number of spam messages for any real account (including this
one which I post unmunged to usenet) with the exception of the period when
various virii were scanning USENET for addresses to send themselves to.

For filtering email, the proper thing to do is ask whomever runs your
email
server (Hal?) to install filtering software.
