Then how did Teller patent the H-bomb?

Carbon dioxide is useful.  It carbonates beverages, is essential for
plant growth, and keeps our planet warm enough to sup****t human life.

A bigger problem might be prior art.  CO2 was in use in the lower
Proterozoic, and probably much earlier.
