I didn't say nobody cares; I said nobody carries on.  There are no
strident editorials about how we have to make sure anyone with a
criminal or mental health history can never get their hands on a car,
or about how campuses should be instantly locked down whenever a
pedestrian is struck.

Seatbelts and airbags do nothing for the safety of anyone not
in a car.  Drunk driving laws are still quite lenient (see
http://KeithLynch.net/bush.html).
 And about half of all traffic
fatalities don't involve alcohol, anyway.
