About six months ago I did a comparison on Apple laptops versus
Windows-based laptops it came out that the Apple cost about 15% more
than a similarly specced 1st-rank manufacturer's (Toshiba, HP) laptop
(including a Windows licence). Going down into 2nd-rank manufacturers
like Acer or Fujitsu I could get the same hardware spec with Windows
licence for about 40% less than the Apple. Part of the reason for the
disparity in price is that Windows-based laptops are heavily discounted
by retailers.
There are no retail discounters of Apple kit in the UK -- the prices
for the same Apple machines from different retailers match to within a
pound or two and this price maintenance is enforced rigorously by Apple
as the monopoly supplier of Apple kit to retailers.
