In the U.S., Amazon is usually cheaper to buy from than Apple, even with
my educational discount. Amazon's rebate roughly equals the discount,
and Amazon doesn't have to charge me sales tax. It would be an even
better deal for someone not entitled to the educational discount from
Apple.
I recently purchased a new machine from my wife from a different seller
which, for that machine at that time, was noticeably less than Amazon,
something I usually can't find. The day after I ordered it I got a phone
call from the seller, trying to sell me very overpriced memory and
various other add-ons, which I declined. My conclusion was that the
seller was cutting the price and making it up on purchasers sufficiently
ignorant to buy the add-ons.
