Yes, you're probably right. It was just such a disconnect - a bit
like (though I'm sure there is no such thing) a Hallmark "Happy
Holocaust Day" card.
Should you visit any small town or village in Scotland or England
you'll find - quite prominent - a memorial to "the Glorious Dead" of
the 1914-18 war. Read the names and you'll realise that in many cases
a whole generation of that town's menfolk were wiped out - WIPED out.
(in some cases they joined up in what was known as "Pals brigades" -
a group of fellow workers from a factory, whole villages,
football(soccer) teams and their sup****ters). All that were left in
some cases were those who were too young or too old, or too disabled,
to fight. From an early age, especially if you were a Scout or a
Guide or in the Boys Brigade or Girls Guildry, you learn the sorrow,
the loss, that this war brought. Visit in November and see the piles
of scarlet wreaths laid fresh every year.

This is the "Heart of Midlothian" memorial at Haymarket (major road
junction close to the city centre) in Edinburgh. Hearts players and
fans joined up together and died together.
