Joyce fans seems to be as obsessive and nit-picky as any group of fans.
In the Calypso section of Ulysses, Bloom has brought Molly her
breakfast in bed. She'd been reading a novel and come across the word
"metempsychosis" and asks what it means. The novel is Ruby: the Pride
of the Ring and someone claims to have tracked this down to be Ruby, a
novel, founded on the Life of a Circus Girl by Amye Reade. The word
"metempsychosis" does not appear in this novel. But then, the one
sentence from the novel we do get is "The monster Maffei desisted and
flung his victim from him with an oath." and it appears the sadistic
ringmaster in the novel is actually called Signor Enrico. To quote
from Ulysses Annotated by Don Gifford, "Ruby is worked to exhaustion,
beaten when she falters, and hounded to death before the eyes of her
father, who has been returned from Australia (by sentimental convention)
jut in time."
