 During the 1993 Worldcon I remember walking across Market St. on my way
back to the ops office in one of the hotels, accompanied by a guy in a
chain-mail hauberk and wearing a sword scabbarded at his side. We went
past a police car where two tired-looking cops were remonstrating with a
local who was waving a broken walking stick in the air. The cops paid us
no attention.

 In Brighton in 1979 during the Worldcon I staggered out of the
Metropole early in the morning after an all-nighter and wandered down
the beach to the water's edge where there was a Viking asleep in a
deckchair, small-axe hooked conveniently to hand on the back rail. After
a while he woke up, looked around at me and muttered "Breakfast?" I
nodded and we went back up to the seafront and found a cafe doing a full
English. Biggest problem he had was finding somewhere to park his sword
as the cafe was a bit crowded.
