You are quite incorrect in that belief. The British nuclear project was
merged into the Manhattan Project. There were several British scientists
at Los Alamos, playing significant roles. There were also Manhattan
Project operations in Canada, although the jobs they were assigned
(Heavy-water based in large part, taking advantage of Canada's vast
supplies of hydroelectricity) didn't pan out as vital.

The British and Canadian governments were well aware of the project.
Naturally, the information was closely held. The Soviets were also aware
of it, thanks to espionage.

American, which is a good account all-round.
