I was watching that great Ealing comedy Passport to Pimlico recently.
It was the first time I'd seen it in years and I'd forgotten how it
opened.  It's a pastiche of every film you've ever seen set in South
America.  A man in a light suit is sitting at his desk wiping the sweat
away.  There's an electric fan on the desk and the sun is streaming
through the venetian blind.  On the soundtrack you can hear Latin
American rhythms.  Outside, it's siesta time.  Then the camera pans
back and you can see you are in London and the BBC announcer says, "You
have been listening to a concert given by Les Brown and his Bethnal
Green Bambinos."

Bethal Green is a less than salubrious area in the East End of London.
(Jack the Ripper operated there in the nineteenth century and the Krays
lived there in the sixties.)
