In Thunderbird, when a message is sending, there is a box on the screen 
that says "Sending Message" and which displays a virtual cigarette that 
it smokes. In happier days, the cigarette was gone so fast I didn't see 
it. Lately, it sits there for an indeterminate amount of time.

There is a "cancel" button at the bottom of this box. Pressing it will 
often cancel the message before it is sent, which in theory would allow 
me to fix an error I see while it's sitting there. In practice, if there 
is an error to be fixed, no amount of pressing this button will avail, 
even if I have thirty seconds in which to press it over and over whilst 
cursing melodiously.
