Somebody's newsreader does bizarre things to characters you and I
would consider perfectly good ASCII.  I know it turns any double
space into something weird.  I don't know whose newsreader it is,
or I'd ask him/her to get it fixed.

As to castration, yes, I think that is one of the features that
*used* to disqualify someone for the priesthood.  Other forms of
deformity (a clubfoot, for instance) counted too, and so (at
least in Dante's time) did illegitimacy.  I have no clue in all
the world whether any of these rules are still in effect.
