Neither, actually. The tunic-like garment that a deacon wears,
where a priest would wear a chasuble, is a dalmatic. I was
talking about the little strip of fabric, comparable to the
priest's stole, that goes over the deacon's right shoulder to his
left hip. If it were over the left shoulder to the right hip, it
would be a baldric. There's a proper term for the diaconal
version, I'm sure, but I've asked several clergy (including some
deacons) and they don't know the term either.
Anyway, whatever it's called, they generally wear that when they
come to preach and aren't assisting at Mass.
