Here in Virginia, where it happened, I don't think there's anyone who
would make that connection, i.e. assume that someone wearing blue on
that date was commemorating that surrender.  Blue just has too many
completely unrelated associations.  And of course most people wearing
a particular color don't mean anything at all by it.  Nor have I ever
heard of anyone commemorating April 9th.  Is that date celebrated in
the North?

True, but Lee's surrender broke the back of the Confederacy, as he was
its most im****tant general, and the Army of Northern Virginia was its
most im****tant army.  So it's understandable to regard that as the end.

Supposedly Russia is still technically at war with Germany from WWII.
