They did; they wiped it out.  And then a couple generations later
they said By Jove, this is a great natural harbor and a splendid
place to build a city, and with all this great agricultural land
in the area, it's a good place to put a ****t.

It's had its ups and downs since, but it's still there in some
form.  St. Augustine hung out there for a while.
