When the Beatles catalog (and the Kinks', for that matter) there was
intense bitchingandmoaning about the fact that the early albums were
released only in the (historically correct) mono format.

(OTOH, i have an early copy of the Rolling Stones' "Hot Rocks" - the
original UK release - that features four tracks that are even listed
on the track list as mono in what sounds like true stereo; later
editions restored the mono versions that had been used on the original
LP release)
