Institutional investors can have a significant stake in companies.
For instance I notice that CREF's stock fund held almost a million
shares of Bear Stearns at the end of 2007 for a loss of about
$70 million at today's price. When the news re****ts on "big losers"
they usually concentrate on individuals, not institutional investors.
CREF represents the retirement funds of lots and lots of teachers and
school administration and staff.
Checking the re****t for Bear Stearns I see that institutional
investors hold 77% of the company's stock. It's impossible to tell how
the owner****p of the funds they maintain breaks down.
