DVD player batteries

Last July I posted:

I have since discovered that if I detach the battery pack from the
player, it doesn't lose charge.

For some reason, the player is always drawing current if it's attached
to the battery pack or plugged into the wall.  There doesn't seem to
be any point in this, since it recovers just fine from being completely
without power for days.  Yes, including non-volatile settings.

I guess it's just shoddy design.
