AFNI and their ilk would have to carry through and forward their claims
to the credit agency. To do this they'd have to certify both that the
debt was one you'd actually incurred and had refused to pay and that they
were either the lender or an authorized agent of the lender. Since one
is certainly a falsehood and the other is very likely to be as well they'd
be leaving themselves open to a civil suit. I strongly suspect they're
just trying to get money from whoever is willing to send it in.

Homes are typically purchased with borrowed money, cars are frequently
purchased with borrowed money and I'd suspect that an overwhelming
majority of people of moderate or higher income have credit cards, for
the wealthy more for convenience than for lack of funds. Several sites I
searched made the claim that the "big three" credit bureaus maintain
files on 90% of adults. With good a good rating it can become better to
buy on credit than to use cash, even discounting the well-known mortgage
deduction.
