Some people may believe that they can earn more investing than the bank 
charges--and some of them may even be right.

In the case of mortgages, as I think someone already mentioned, because 
mortgage interest is deductible, and your investments may pay their 
return as capital gains, which is taxed at a lower rate than income and 
only when realized.

And credit cards often don't start charging interest until some time 
after they are used, so if you pay your bills promptly you are getting 
the loan interest free.
