Well, seeing that that was true in both cases for my father's house at
the time of his death last year, that's not too unbelievable.

Mind you, he did have digital TV, what we call digital terrestrial over
here, picked up through a normal aerial.

More in keeping with the original question of technological back steps,
he had had cable in the past.  In the 1960s, the Redifusion company
experimented with cabling the town we lived in.  There was a communal
aerial on a tower on the outskirts of the town, and the signals were
relayed to all the houses on the town through a cable.  Just the three
terrestrial channels we had back then though, plus a community radio
station, as I recall (and we could get two regional variations of ITV).

In the seventies, or early eighties, this service was discontinued.
Cable TV never really started in this country till the early nineties.

But doorstep milk deliveries are still going on.
