I remember an incident at a con in Leeds in the UK round about 1980.
At that time, many of my fannish circle in the south-east had been
buying houses for the first time.  And there was a definite north-south
divide in house prices.  We were walking past an estate agent's window
on the way out to eat and looked at the local house prices, and
compared them to what we'd expect in the London area.  One person was
heard to exclaim, "I wonder if they take credit cards!"
