I had always thought the Lens was round rather than ellipsoidal.
The first mention of the shape of the Lens in _Galactic Patrol_,
Kim's just before it is given to him, is "a lenticular jewel
fabricated of hundreds of tiny, dead-white gems." After it's
installed on his arm it's "a lenticular polychrome of writhing,
almost fluid radiance."
In _First Lensman_, Samms's first sight of his Lens is as "a
lenticular something ... composed of thousands -- millions -- of
tiny gens, each of which emitted pulsatingly all the colors of
the spectrum."
So the Lens is "lenticular," which means literally "shaped like
a lentil" -- circular in footprint, flat in cross-section, with
somewhat tapered edges. Can you find any text where Smith says
it's ellipsoidal in footprint? (And don't tell me that a circle
is just a special case of an ellipse.)
Anyway. How is mention of the Lens going to attract spammers?
