I don't know if this helps, but you're not supposed to cross your eyes 
for those. You let them drift slightly apart -- not wall-eyed, exactly, 
but not as close together as when you are focusing both on a close-up 
object.

I've been free-viewing stereo slides for years. It's very handy when you 
don't have a viewer, or the images are in a book and you couldn't use 
one anyway. At that, there are a lot of stereograms that either don't 
work for me or just aren't worth the trouble.

Our paper used to run one, and with the printing it got, it wasn't worth 
trying. The colors would be off register, and so on. I thought of 
writing them a letter once, "You run a regular item in the Sunday comics 
that I have to stare and squint at in order to see something vague and 
pointless that's invariably stupid and gives me a headache. But enough 
about Mallard Fillmore..."
