For myself (and I suspect I've posted about this before) I independently
invented the technique when quite young -- I discovered that if I looked
at a chain link fence using it, it made the fence seem much closer
than it really was, which I thought was an interesting illusion.
Worked on hexagonal bathroom tiles, too.  So when the "Magic Eye"
stuff came along I was all ready.

I learned to do cross-eye from a book of 3-D pictures, back when I was
working part time at "The Other Change of Hobbit".  Took me quite a
while to manage to focus on the picture without losing the eye-cross.
