Slate.com is posting a three-part article this week on how Fujinese
migration to the United States is affecting the Fujian Province in
China. This article is of interest to me because I'm an immigration
lawyer and most of my clients are from Fujian Province. The rest are
from other parts of China. Keep in mind by most, I mean nearly 100% of
my clients are Fujinese. Now, the article mentions an interesting
factoid that in Fujian Province, some kindergarten classes are
composed of 10% of US citizen kids of Fujinese parents. Its a custom,
Fujinese parents really do this, for Fujinese parents to send their
kids back to China till about the second grade.
Naturally this led to a comment on the Fray, the Reader's Forum,
that this is a sign that the 14th Amendment or more specifically the
part about all kids born on US soil being US citizens should be
reconsidered. I posted a response on why this policy is not wise,
because their are many people who possess the right to live in the
United States who are not citizens and who are ineligible to become
citizens, and this would really screw over their kids. The poster was
unmoved and continued advocating his or her harsh position.
I never understood why so many people are attracted to
harshness., particularly when its harshness on people who do not
deserve it.
