Robert Hunter wrote most of it, certainly almost all the lyrics. Jerry
Garcia was involved also. I haven't heard Gilmore's version but I look
forward to seeking it out. It is one of the few Dead songs where the
recorded version is probably better than any live version. Certainly,
I never heard them equal the version on American Beauty live. Without
David Grisman's mandolin, the song is still beautiful and haunting but
not quite as good.

The "haiku":

Ripple in still water,
When there is no pebble tossed,
Nor wind to blow.

isn't quite a haiku but it's lovely.
