 January 31st. After that a penalty applies, UKP 100 per month until you
actually submit the form. You can apply for an extension but it's best
to do that before the penalties cut in.

 I do mine online since I'm self-employed. I fill in two forms, the base
form that covers stuff like investment income, pensions etc. and a
second form for self-employment income. It usually takes me an evening
or so to get all the paperwork together (invoices, bills, receipts etc.)
and generate a spreadsheet that will tell me what numbers to punch into
the online forms as appropriate.

 I do tend to wait until December or the beginning of January to do this
-- until they receive the forms the Revenue can't bill me for any tax
due. Being self-employed I'm not on PAYE so I have to pay a lump sum
after my tax liability is calculated. Delaying the submission means the
money I keep in the bank to make the expected payment earns a decent
amount of interest.
