Because the first time he met the word, he heard it from a UK English 
speaker?  (and he's been living in the UK ever since, kind of)

My Aunt in Tulsa (lately deceased) was born in Glasgow.  Married a GI 
at the end of WWII and travelled back to the US with him.  Lived there 
ever since.

Developed a VERY American accent.... except ... there were words that 
she learned to pronounce in Glasgow, and never needed to use much in 
the US, so whenever she said them, she said them with the exact same 
pronunciation and intonation she'd have learned in Scotland, whereas 
words she used daily in Tulsa she said with an Oklahoma accent.
