[rasffers, beware the followups]
Readers may remember postings from a couple of years back regarding the
Oxford English Dictionary's SF citation project.
It's apparently an ongoing project, webbed at <http://www.jessesword.com/>
I just submitted what is apparently the first SF citation
for "autochthones", referring to the indigenes of a planet or location. I
found it in Drake and Wagner's 1985 _Killer_, but I'm sure I've heard it
earlier than that. Could be Poul Anderson, since he's got a few,
like "sophont" and "biotechnician" and apparently "empathy". In fact,
it's
in a 1913 Webster's.
Looking over the list a bit:
Tanstaafl: First cite is Heinlein's in 1966, but there is an
earlier "tinstaafl" from 1952 in the journal "Ethics". I seem to recall
the Republican party using it in 1980 or so.
Cyborg: Heinlein got this one in 1966 also, but OED wants a cite
antedating
1960 for some reason.
Gafiate is in there, but I didn't see any "fiawol" or "fijagdh" (sp?)
(fandom is just a god-damned hobby).
Fugghead is apparently very fannish, as is ob (obligatory reference).
Scientifiction and stf are in different sections.
Android goes back to 1727; selenite to 1645.
There is no "unobtanium", "handwavium", or even "hand waving"
I am sure they want cites for all this, for everything on their lists, and
for more besides.
