Much alternative medicine seems like that to me.  I remember a
colleague at work who realised he was coming down with the symptoms of
a cold.

"But I can't be getting a cold," he protested.  "I take plenty of
vitamin C."

I pointed out that vitamin C cold prevention fad had never been
scientifically proved.

"I don't care," he said.  "It works for me."
