I don't know why people are so quick to believe absurd stories just 
because they're credited to major news organizations. If it sounds 
too crazy to be true, it probably is.

A couple weeks ago there was a story about a guy who was arrested 
because he put a case of soda under his shopping cart and forgot it 
was there when he checked out. On the forum where I saw the story, 
there were a bunch of people who were outraged, calling for the 
manger of the store and arresting officer to be fired. Anyone who 
said, "Now wait a second, this smells fishy. There has to be more to 
the story," was accused of being an apologist for the corporate 
jackboots.

A few days later there was a follow up item -- the store had 
released a surveillance tape showing the guy stopping his cart as he 
was leaving the store and loading five cases of Pepsi into the 
undercarriage. Suddenly everyone who'd been outraged was curiously 
silent.
