The ending of The Incredible Shrinking Man wasn't particularly
religious. ("God" was only mentioned in a metaphorical sense--you could
change Scott Carey's final speech from "To God" to "To the cosmos" and
it would still work fine.) Other sci-fi films, such as "War of the
Worlds" and "When Worlds Collide" had a much more explicit religious
theme.
The ending of The Incredible Shrinking Man can better be described as
"existentialist": I shrink, therefore I am. And I thought that was
just fine, getting away from the usual cliche endings. If they did a
remake today, either Scott Carey would get killed at the end, or the
scientists would develop the super-potion to cure him.
