They would simply deduct "church tax" from his paycheck, like they
would do with other taxes, *if* chux tax laws even applies to

Funny story, bit it's far more likely that he registered as a
Catholic, noticed that church tax got deducted, decided that he didn't
want to play and told them that he left the church.  The church might
have sent a priest to check his conviction to leave, though. They
didn't for me, though, but that was in the 90s.  Anyway, afterwards he
indeed wasn't Catholic anymore. And unless there has been a new ****sm
I don't know about, someone leaving the Roman Catholic Church in
German leaves the Roman Catholic Church in the United States, too. He
can, of course, lie to his American priest about it and take part in
communion, but that would be quite a sin and quite likely to catch
heaven's immigration offices attention.
