First Look At New 'Star Trek XI' Trailer
By MICHAEL HINMAN
Jan-15-2008
This story contains MAJOR SPOILERS for the upcoming teaser trailer of
"Star Trek XI."
So there have been fakes, and there has been speculation. But what is
the first look of the new Star Trek movie from J.J. Abrams going to look
like? Apparently, Hollywood Chicago got a sneak peek at what fans will
see beginning on Friday with Abrams' upcoming film, "Cloverfield."
As previously reported, the trailer will feature quite extensively the
construction of the USS Enterprise, but unexpectedly will also pay
homage to America's space program.
Following the studio cards for Paramount and Bad Robot, some sparks
light up a black, saturated screen with audio of an old NASA radio
countdown: "30 seconds and counting."
The camera closes in on a "timeless guy with goggles" leaning forward as
if he's welding something. When he lifts his goggles, a futuristic head
covering is seen, but it is not a space suit. As the man leans down,
it's discovered that he is standing on a giant sheet of metal just in
time for "From Director J.J. Abrams" to appear in a blue font and with
lens flare.
Then John F. Kennedy can be heard talking about space flight, saying
that "the eyes of the world now look to space." At the same time, there
are people walking around the saucer section of the ship, and the
welders are everywhere, showing the size of the massive structure.
Then the audio declares, "the Eagle has landed," and a huge overhead
shot pans, showing what looks like "miles of scaffolding underneath."
Also appearing on the screen is "The Future Begins."
"Really impressive shot from the nacelle of people all over the ship,
and you can see a huge industrialized city or shipyard in the
background," the source told Hollywood Chicago. "It's being built on
Earth, not in space."
Soon after, Neil Armstrong can be heard with his famous Moon-landing
speech of "One small step for man ..." That's when the camera pans up
and the whole saucer section of the Enterprise becomes visible. At that
time, the famous voice of Leonard Nimoy is heard saying the immortal
Star Trek words, "Space, the final frontier" as well as the "Star Trek"
horn salute.
As the shot continues to pan the saucer, the characters "U.S.S.
Enterprise" become visible, with huge aircraft-like warp engines in the
background, which technically gives the first reveal of the entire ship.
Then the trailer ends with a wordless Starfleet logo followed by "Under
Construction" and "Christmas 2008"
Although IESB says the description is legitimate, please note that is
has not been confirmed by anyone at Paramount Pictures, so it should be
treated as any rumor would.
"Star Trek XI's" trailer premieres Friday in theaters attached to
"Cloverfield," and on the Internet Jan. 21. The movie itself hits
theaters Dec. 25.
