You don't have to be a kid to enjoy watching an
enormous creature stomping on familiar landmarks.

I don't see the issue as being the newness of the movie,
but whether or not it has what makes a monster movie
worth watching (a good monster and good monster FX),
without wasting too much time on irrelevent trivia like
trying to create characters we "care about" or trying to
put some kind of clever "new spin" on the traditional
monster movie plot (or lack thereof).

It's all about the monster.  Period.
