It is simple minded to accuse the film for failing to do something it 
wasn't attempting to do.

No body was suffering from the delusion that the video footage was of 
real events.  It was advertised as a movie after all.

The reason for the point of view of the video camera was to create a 
reason to follow these particular characters, as opposed the usual 
plethora of survivors whose stories you are supposed to care about until 
the monster stomps them, and to make the nature of the monster/threat 
more mysterious because you only glimpse it when the video camera 
glimpses it.  In practice it has the additional benefit of reducing the 
monster's screen time and thus reducing the cost of the film.

Which goes to the bottom line and the big profit.

If you don't like the film (and there are reasons not to, such as having 
to follow these particular characters, who are obnoxious), that's fine.  
But to state that the film is a failure is just delusion.  The film is a 
success by the only measure that matters....$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
