I liked the movie, because it was a different kind of "monster." 
Instead of the usual dinosaur or giant bug that comes out and eats 
people, it was a radioactive element with amazing properties.

The drama came from the study of the element by the scientists, to learn 
how to manage it safely.  To me, "The Magnetic Monster" was for physics 
what "The Andromeda Strain" was for microbiology:  The drama was in the 
process of discovery.

The movie is 50 years old, and it's still got a better monster than this 
new one in "Cloverfield."
