In the sequel, a year after the original, New York has recovered for the 
most part and you have Our New Heroes--a local news duo, reporter and 
camera-tech, interviewing a pair of local celebrities at a charity 
function--deciding that the return of the Creature(s) is a bigger story.
--ONH are evacuated to a safe zone, just happen to overhear national guard

orders about the tracking the Creatures.
--While in a medical safe zone being decontaminated, they happen to
overhear 
local scientists reporting on the origins of the Creatures based on 
preliminary test results.
--While flying out of state they see the damage the Creatures have caused,

and overhear flight plan changes based on new sightings of the Creatures.
--When in a "safe" state their wifi connection reactivates allowing ONH 
access to the internet and they get a global view of extent of the danger
as 
blogs, reports, postings, photos and videos of the Creatures are posted
from 
everywhere online access is available. With online access, the reporter
duo 
are able to post their own footage--and thus is the conceit of how the 
sequel movie was discovered.
