"Cancellation" refers to when they got word the series
would not be picked up for a fourth season.  That news
came midway through the third season broadcasts, by 
which time the majority of the season's episodes had
already been filmed (I seem to recall reading somewhere
that they filmed the last five or six episodes knowing that
they wouldn't be back, but can't remember where I saw that).  
Back in the 60's, networks seldom pulled series off the 
air halfway through a season.  Mid-season replacements 
and series dying after four eps on the air wouldn't become
common until well after TOS was off the network lineup.
