Because that's what they looked like:  Giant lice, and they fell off the 
hide of the monster.

They did NOT look like larvae.

In the movie, I was expecting either a military guy or a scientist to 
order the military to cease fire--every time they bomb the monster, it 
shakes loose more of the parasites.  That would give the script a 
reasonable excuse as to why the military can't just blast the monster 
with bunker buster bombs--it would just scatter the parasites.

I guess Abrams didn't think of that.
