Was It Really Necessary?

I was watching the lost in space movie and feeling kinda sad: we have
gone from loving and caring families to fucked up, dysfunctional ones.
But was it really necessary to make the Robinsons such a train wreck?
Couldn't the writers  made them the way they  were baack in the '60s
and still have a decent movie? Maybe even a better movie?
