Only Americans would think it worth saving in the first place. Most 
of the rest of the world would figure, "Well, if the world is 
destroyed, then America will be destroyed, so it's OK."

There's a whole subgenre of science fiction books wherein it isn't 
scientists who save the world, but science fiction writers.
