Um, yes he did.  Lots of times.  The Spirit wore all kinds of
different clothes. The only thing standard was the mask. And the hat,
until it fell off.

Eisner denied it was a COMIC book.  Vehemently.  It was a NEWSPAPER
strip.  He played with the BIG BOYS.  Dark and sombre?- Eisner
invented Dark and Sombre.
